Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
